Nfu Oh Flakies & Holo Review and Swatchfest!

Hello Guys and Dolls! Are you ready?  I spent the better part of a day swatching & photographing these ladies, so this post will be drool worthy picture heavy. These polishes are so magnificent, I find myself with the urge to say, “we’re not worthy! we’re not worthy!” Wayne’s World reference anyone? MILANI PAINT PALETTE & HIGH SPEED FAST DRY Nail Lacquer Review, Swatches

Hi Guys and Dolls! Milani is dropping a bomb on us this month- limited edition goodies that are worth tracking down (or just buying on their website). These were sent to me for review, but I’ve been stalking every CVS in the area trying to find them so I could pick some up to giveaway, but I haven’t found any part of this “collection” anywhere! I know it’s only at Select CVS’ but Damn! I’ve been to 6 CVS stores: zip, nada, zilch. My suggestion is to buy these off the Milani Website. Paying for shipping sucks- I know, but these are pretty darn awesome especially for the price-point! Read the rest of this entry

In the Mood Nail Polish

Hi Guys & Dolls!

Today I’m really excited to share with you COLOR CHANGING NAIL POLISH! Now I know color-changing polish isn’t something new: there’s ones that change with UV light, ones that change in the Sunlight (wait, wouldn’t that be the same thing?), and ones that change with temperature like these! I had never tried anything like this, so when it was sent for review consideration I was quite surprised by how much I fell in love with them!

According to in the mood’s Press Release:

These playful nail polishes change color based on your body temperature, your mood, the heat of your latte…or, of course, the chill of your iced coffee! And they will continue changing back and forth as long as you wear them. Cool swim in the ocean? Warm subway ride? Frigid morning run? Sitting under the hair dryer at the salon? Amuse yourself by guessing what shade your delightfully bi-polar nail polish will be at any given moment!

Naughty-A Hot Hot orange perfect for summer that turns to a cool yellow

Ditsy-A vibrant Fuchsia that turns to a dainty pink

Guilty-An iridescent purple that fades to a show stopping blue

Now I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m pretty “spesh” when it comes to nail polish/lacquer. I’m pretty awful at painting my nails, I have dry, rough cuticles, my nails are not uniformly shaped,  and I can’t keep polish on longer than a few days with out it chipping horribly! Some of that is because I use hand-sanitizer several times a day at work (seriously, 15-20 times a day. I’m a makeup artist so it’s important to be hygienic) and I use my hands for everything!

I’m also really impatient and I can’t stand waiting around for my nail polish to dry and if  it is runny/streaky/thick/annoying in any way I usually just give up. In fact if a polish gives me guff I generally give it to my kid-sister, no matter how pretty the color is/cool the effect is -she’s gotten some pretty awesome holos that had bad dry-time! Basically my point is that because I’m not a skilled nail-painter, and I’m impatient, I need very high quality polishes that apply evenly without me really trying, and last a few days without chipping (I also rarely leave a mani on longer than 3 days)  I have very eclectic tastes in polish I like it all from baby-poop green to silver holos and now, “mood” changing!

The formula on these is great- smooth, pigmented, & dries quickly! On top of that I just adore the colors, but warm and cold, so all in all I LOVE THESE!!

All my swatches are 2 coats. On their own, these dry to a semi-matte finish, which looks really cool, and the shimmer shows a bit more on the pink- with a topcoat it looks like a cream for some reason!! Anyway, here’s some nail polish PrOn for you:

Naughty, Ditsy, Guilty at room temperature

Bottles half warm (top) half cold (bottom)

Bottles warmed up

Here’s Naughty transitioning between colors,  cool eh?

All 3 colors without top coat.

Half & Half with top coat (Seche Vite)

In the video above I demo the transition from warm to cold and then cool to warm. Isn’t it cool? I love it! I find myself checking my nails to see the color!

What? The Mood Polish

Where to Buy? www.themoodpolish.com

How Much? $8 for .49oz

Tested On Animals?  -Unknown ~ Update June 9th 2011 ~  I contacted the company and they said that they do not test on animals. ~

SO what do you think, is this just a corny fad, or does the coolness of the effect rank them up with Holos, Flakies, etc..?

Shattered Rainbow Nails!

Hey Guys & Dolls!

Several weeks back I heard that OPI was launching a Shatter Nail Lacquer with their Katy Perry collection. I got super excited: memories of reading Seventeen magazine and obsessing about this cool crackle nail polish that Cover Girl used to sell came flooding back to me. OH how I wanted crackle nail polish, but I never got it!!! I wanted it so so so bad, but I could never find it! Oh those unfulfilled teenage dreams!

Anyway, for that past 3 weeks I’ve been calling my fave local  beauty supply to see if they had this in (they get pretty much every collection from Zoya, Orly, and OPI,) and FINALLY it came in, so yesterday I got a shatter nail Lacquer!!!!!! Happygasm! The teen in me squeeled with joy!

Once I got a bottle in my hot little hand it wasn’t long before I started plotting polishes to use under it. Should I do a Holographic? Sparkle? Glitter? I asked my twitter followers but I just could wait for responses, so I tried these and I just wasn’t “wowed” the way I wanted to be. Then I tried a foil-silver under the crackle; it was so totally hot, but  Silver and Black seemed too obvious considering the label on the bottle. Many of my twitter followers suggested brights, and someone suggested RAINBOW!

What do you get when you mix:

O.P.I Shatter Lacquer

with:

THE COLORS DUKE, THE COLORS! (if anyone gets that joke you’re cool)

From L-R

China Glaze Ruby Pumps, Sinful Colors Cloud 9, MAC Phosphor, Zoya Ivanka, and Orly Lunar Eclipse

It wasn’t long before I was skittle-ing my nails, and reading one of my fave nail blogs Scrangie for Shatter application tips (I’ll let her explain it, since as you can tell by my nail pictures below, I’m no pro nail artist!). I have to say that this would have turned out better if the red and blue had been lighter shades. Also the Virgo in me is coming out and I wish I had a rainbow of colors that all had the same texture (all sparkle like the Ivanka or all shimmer like Phosphor or all mattes, since they dry fast and the polish needs to be really dry for the shatter effect to really work)). Some day!

One thing I’ve noticed it that this polish it goopy- when I do my normal wiping off of the brush around the opening, it just sort of sticks there- not only does that make the bottle gunky, but it means product loss. Not a huge deal but I will have to adjust how I pull out the brush. I might need to go buy a back-up bottle, but I’ve heard that China Glaze will also be doing a version of this. If only there was a place local to me that sold the new CG collections (I hate paying shipping for such a small purchase!!

So what do you think? Are you excited to pick this up, or are you passing on it?

Where to buy: Anywhere that sells O.P.I (here’s their site  to find a location near you)

How Much? $8-$9 depending on your retailer

PS- This is my first post using my new camera!!!!!!!

The animal testing policies of O.P.I and Sinful colors are unknown, but all other products used are cruelty-free (not tested on animals) to be best of my knowledge. I strive to buy only-cruelty free, but I don’t judge those who cannot. I know that not everyone can has the ability put their money where their heart is, but I do my best to only show cruelty-free options.

November Faves

Hi guys and dolls! As you can guess from the title, I’ve decided to start doing monthly fave videos. Everyone seems to really enjoy this type of video, I myself love them, and they seem like easy videos to make. Not that I’m trying to take the easy route, but making my life a bit easier is pretty high on my priority list right now.

In truth, I’ve been wanting to do them for a long time, but I always feel like I need to properly review each item first, and for me,  that’s sort of a hassle. Then I had an ephiany: the monthly faves videos sort of ARE a mini review for each item, DUH! So here’s my first monthly fave video, and a mini review of each item. Some of these you’ve seen me review before, some of these are things I’ve kept mum about!

First up is Rimmel Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in “Celeb”.  I first tried this brand/type of lipstick back in 2006, and at that time I had “Alarm” (a  dark red I bought for a Sally the Rag Doll Costume). For some stupid reason when I became full-fledged obsessed with MAC I bought their Russian Red Lipstick, and gave Alarm to my then- housemate.  I bought Airy Fairy last winter, and I love it; I always use it for light lip looks (it’s sort of a light nude pink with very subtle gold sheen).

I’ve been dying to get Celeb, but it’s never in stock when I look. Rimmel was recently 50% off at my local Walgreens, and they only had one “Celeb” in stock, and the top had been smashed into the cap (GR) but I bought it -and sanitized it- anyway. Celeb is a deeper, warmer nude-pink than Airy Fairy. For me, it’s somewhat similar to my natural lip color, so I’d call it a nude lipstick. I myself am not really a fan of the flesh-tone lip color thing that a lot of people call nude. To me, nude should be somewhat similar to your lip color.  Anyways, Celeb is a very creamy lipstick, similar to a MAC Amplified Cream finish. It has sort of a Chocolate (or is it cinnamon) smell that I like and dislike at the same time. The smell dissipates after about 3 minutes, so it’s not a major deal. Rimmel says this lipstick formula gives you 8 hours of wear, and I really wouldn’t know about that. I for one think lipstick starts to feel weird after 2 hours, so I always remove and re-apply. I’m also not a fan of eating with lipstick on ( have you ever seen your lipstick on your sandwich? that means you’re eating your lipstick, ICK!) Overall, I think celeb is a great creamy, warm,  nude-pink that feels smooth an moisturizing on your lips.  This is about 5.99 at drugstores.

Celeb Rimmel Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick

I already reviewed the Hard Candy “Nobody’s Perfect Concealer Palette” so in the interest of keeping this post a bit shorter/not repeating my self too much, I’ll simply link you to that review. This was somewhere between 5-8 dollars at Walmart.

I said I didn’t want to repeat myself, (sigh) but once again, I already reviewed the Urban Decay 24/7 Liners so here’s a link to that post (blogging is getting easy, LOL). What I will say is that I’m pretty much obsessed with these. I want all the colors. Hopefully I’ll be getting some of the  MUFE Aqua Eyes liners so I can do a comparison :) these are normally 17.00 on the urban Decay Website and at Sephora and Sephora.com

The Migi Velvet Liner was sent to me for review purposes by the same company that makes the Migi Nail Art Pens that I previously reviewed/demoed . Basically, this is a liquid liner pen it’s like drawing on your eyeliner with a VERY fine tipped marker. Several companies make eyeliners like this, one that comes to mind is MAC . I can’t find out how much is in the Migi pen, and I searched the pen itself, the Migi Velvet Liner site, &  the packaging, so who knows, the MAC one could have more or less in it. If I remember the MAC one wasn’t completely smudge proof, but the Migi one is. I put it on in the morning, ant it’s right there exactly as I had it when I come home 9-11 hours later. I can get a SUPER thin line with this and I love it! It has a slightly shiny finish as well, which is a nice break from the Matte blacks I normally use. I will say I only like the Black color, the green and the blue seem a bit sheer, and I really don’t like how the pens are not color labeled.

Last but not least, “Worth My Weight” Sephora by Opi nail polish. This is a gold (hence the name, ha-ha) glitter polish with silver 3-d silver glitter that is far more that the sum of it’s parts. Applied on the nails is had a rough almost matte finish and appears cool-gold. When you apply a top coat, the gold deepens and  warms up!  One way or the other, I feel like this polish could work for everyone. It dries lightning fast, and since it’s Limited edition, I only have 3 words: FREAKING GET IT! even if you hate it, you can give it as a gift to a friend or in my case, a kid sister. The only thing I don’t like is that the brush is humongous.  The only other Sephora by Opi nail polish doesn’t have such a big brush, so I don’t know if the glitter makes it bigger, or if it’s something they did because it’s a LE shade, but it’s like a big nail polish mop. But seriously, Just look at this polish, it’s clearly worth it!

Blurry to show the 3-d Silver glitter OOOOHHHH

Nail Polish haul: China Glaze and Color Club

Hi Guys and Dolls. I’ve had these polishes for about a month, but I keep forgetting to show you my swatches! China Glaze’s fall collection is called Retro Diva ( play on last years Rodeo Diva?) and I also wanted to pick up one more of the Kaleidoscope Holos before they disappear (the Kaleidoscope collection is discontinued. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll ever get my hands on Let’s Do It In 3d, or Tickle My Triangle. Le Sigh)

I’m sorry my application is a bit messy, I’m not what you’d call a pro at applying nail polish, and yes, my cuticles are a mess. I’m over it, lol.

It’s My Turn 3 Coats. This is a glittery Gold holographic polish (meaning it reflects many different colors, but the glitter sort of works together, rather than independently, savvy?) with has a cool undertone that I’m not sure if I like, though truth be told I think the coolness probably suits my skin tone better than a warm gold would. Those of you familiar with the OMG collection Holos you might think these look more like a glitter polish. I love the smooth-linear-ness of the OMG holos, but these are just….Amazing. I can’t tell which I prefer more, the smooth Holo of the OMG’s or the chunkier holo of these Kaleidoscope polishes. The OMG’s are pretty much opaque in 2 coats, the Kaleidoscope’s typically need 3, since they seem to not have much of a base color.

Let’s Groove 2 coats. A dark purple shimmer with a lit-from within radiance. In person, you relly don’t see with little blue and red shimmers, but they are there. I didn’t think I was going to care for this one as much as the others, but it turned out to be my fave. This one applies really well.

China Glaze Stella

Stella 2 Coats. This one is sort of a shimmery blackened Fuchsia. The color is gorgeous, but I really dislike polishes that show the brush strokes, It’s a major pet peeve of mine. This one isn’t a major offender, but it’s there. The application (other than the brush strokes) is a breeze, and it’s fully opaque in 2 coats, which is really nice.

Color Club “Wild at Heart” 2 coats. This one disappointed me a little bit. It’s a really pretty purple polish that I would classify as a semi-holo. I saw a few pictures of this on Steph’s Closet and Scrangie before I purchased it, so I knew it wasn’t going to be super blingy like China Glaze Holos. This one seems to photograph with more holorifficness than it has otherwise. But it is insanely pretty, in fact, I’m wearing it right now. It’s still a purple with multi colored glitter, what more do you want in a nail polish? oh yeah, Holo. (just kidding)

If You really want a purple Holo, See if You can get your hands on China Glaze’s LOL from the OMG Collection:

China Glaze's LOL and Color Club's Worth the Risque

China Glaze’s LOL and Color Club’s Worth the Risque

I simply love China Glaze, but many of my fave colors aren’t available at my local Sally Beauty Supply.  I like Color Club as well, and I’ve never seen anywhere that sells them local (anyone know of a place in the Oakland/Bay Area that sells a lot of China Glaze/Color Club?). On top of that, even with paying for shipping, it’s cheaper to get these online, since they are 2.50-3.30 a bottle. Yippie!

I got these at Head2toe, since the shipping is lighting fast (for me anyway)

What are some of your current fave nail polishes? Have you tried /do you like  holographic polish?

Rainbow Holographic Nails

So first and foremost, I would like to apologize for the state of my cuticles, and the messy application. Applying nail polish in front of a camera is totally foreign to me, and in time I’ll get the hang of it. Besides, this was a some-what complicated nail design. I’ve included a bunch of pictures from different angles and different focuses so you could really see the holographic effect.
