WEN Cleansing Conditioner: REVIEW, RANT & Alternatives

Wen Cleansing Conditioner $32 for 16oz, purchased by me.

Hello Guys & Dolls!
I first heard to Wen years ago- probably through a friend, maybe on YouTube, I can’t remember. Someone was raving about an all-in-one “Cleansing Conditioner” that eliminated the need for shampoo! At the time I thought- why not just use your regular conditioner? And for years I’ve done just that; the second or third day in-between shampooing my hair I’ll “condition cleanse” with a rich conditioner. The benefit of doing this is that you don’t over-shampoo your hair, which makes haircolor last longer, and is overall healthier for your hair and scalp. Over the years I did find myself wondering if WEN actually worked better than simply using conditioner. Last week I was shopping and a friend who works at Sephora was raving about WEN so I figured I should try it.

And I’m sorry I did.

After looking up reviews and talking with friends who’ve tried it, it seems I’m not alone.  It appears Wen is a very polarizing product- people seem to love it or hate it.  Count me in with the latter. Overall it made my scalp itchy, my hair and scalp felt oily, gave my hair static-electricity and managed to strip the color out of my hair, in the span of 5 days. Seriously. Go black and watch my haul from a week ago (I’ve embedded it below), and you’ll see that my hair was more of a blue-purple, and the pink wasn’t this light. I’m not new to the rodeo, I know Haircolor fades, but the thing is, I know the rate of my Haircolor fading, and this is abnormal- it’s fading much faster than normal, in weird patches. My hair looks blotchy.  It’s faded more in the last 9 days than it has in the previous 3 weeks.

Since I bought the Wen 9 days ago I’ve used Wen 3 times, and washed my hair with my normal sulfate-free shampoo & used my normal conditioner, and then used Wen one more time. When I stopped using it I noticed that my hair felt drier than it was before I used it. My hair feels stripped- the way it feels when you use a clarifying shampoo. This Sunday, after using Wen a total of 5 days I went in for a normal bang trim and my Stylist noticed I had more split ends than normal and asked what I’d done differently. I used Wen.

This is my experience- You might use Wen and have a totally fine experience, you might even love it! I wanted to tell my horrible experience to give credence to the people who say they’ve had terrible experiences with this product. Apparently some people have even experienced hair loss, Whoa dude! I myself have friends who LOVE IT, and I have friends who HATE it. Count me in the hate category. Back to Sephora it goes.

Weather or not you love Wen, it’s expensive right? $32 for 16 oz and the company suggests you use 10-15 pumps. OH LAWD that’s a lot of product. I want to offer you some alternatives. Of course you could go with the knock-offs like “Ren” or “One”- but since these are similar to Wen I don’t think I’ll try them. What I’ve used for years is just plain old conditioner to condition-cleanse. Some don’t work as well as others for this, but I’ve found that Moisture Maniac from Bed Head works great. You can get it on Amazon for $23 for 25.36 oz, and trust me, you won’t need 10-15 pumps.

The other option I want to present to you is using a great sulfate-free shampoo, with a conditioner of your choice. Sulfates are the things that makes traditional shampoo suds up, and gives you that squeeky-clean feeling. Sulfates also kill haircolor. My all-time fave sulfate-free shampoo is L’anza Healing Color Care. It is very gentle on my hair and I’ve noticed that my haircolor lasts much longer when I’m using this. There are many sulfate-free shampoos on on the market, this is just one I trust.

What I typically do is on the first day I wash my hair with my sulfate free shampoo & use conditioner, style and go. The second day I usually don’t wet my hair, I simply re-style it, sometime I use a dry-shampoo if it’s very oily. The the second or third day I use conditioner to “condition cleanse” buy using  about 3-5 pumps of my conditioner and working it into the roots of my hair to break up the oil and give my scalp a massage. And then on the fourth day I start the cycle over again.

Below is my Sephora Haul from 9 days ago if you want to see what my haircolor looked like before using Wen.

I want to hear from you! Have you tried Wen and if so, what do you think?

All products mentioned were purchased by me- and all options stated are my own based on my experience with the product.

LIVE FREE & DYE-HARD! Step by Step Hair Dying Tutorial- Pink, Purple & Black!

Today I’m sharing with you a step by step hair dying tutorial-vlog. Some of this information may seem redundant to some of you fellow dye-hards, but I wanted to included tips & tricks that I’ve learned from coloring my own hair for 16 years.

The number one question I get about my hair is: “Do you have to bleach it?” and the answer is yes.Your hair it needs to have a very light base color in order for the colors to look super vibrant, and the hair cuticle must be damaged for the color to last for any length of time. Some “unnatural” color will stick to virgin hair, but it depends on your own hair’s porosity. My hair is naturally very slick and smooth so bleaching is necessary to open the cuticle, plus a lighter base means more vibrant color.

LIST OF EVERYTHING I USE

Plastic Clips- Metal can react strangely with bleach

Rat-Tail Comb for dividing hair

Tint Brushes

Non-porous Mixing bowl

Clarifying Shampoo- I just use a shampoo that contains sulfates, because these strip the hair.

Nitrilon Gloves- These are latex-free, and they are reusable which makes them better for the environment

I didn’t discuss this in the video, but a deep conditioner after all these processes is a must! I like to apply it and leave it on for hours!

Several Old-T-Shirt you don’t mind ruining (I prefer old Band T-shirts). I use several because I tend to spill a little and I don’t want to put on a shirt that already has dye-globs on in. During the Pink/Purple portion of this video I’m rocking my old Blink 182 shirt!

BLEACH

Prism Lites Violet-Toned Bleach Powder- My hair tends to go very yellow when bleached so using a violet-toned bleach balances this out. Also this smells the best out of every bleach powder I’ve ever used; Almost fruity, but you know, still bleach.

Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer Level 30- nothing to write home about, but it is my go-to developer. Does anyone know what difference using a different brand/type developer would make? Please share in the comments below.

I get both my Pink & Purple dyes at a local non-chain beauty supply. When I have bought them online I’ve bought from both Amphigory and Goodgoth’s websites. Everyone has their favorites, but I really feel that Special Effects makes the longest lasting and most vibrant hair dyes. I’ve been using them for 14 years and I’m very happy with our long term relationship.

PINK

Special Effects Atomic Pink. best pink in my opinion because it starts out very red-pink and as it fades is transitions into hot pink, and then bubble gum pink. If you want your pink more cool-toned try Special Effects “Virgin Rose”, for a lighter pink, “Cupcake Pink” and for a deeper more magenta pink try “Burgundy Wine”- I’ve used all of these colors at different points, but Atomic Pink is my BFF!

PURPLE

This time around I used Special Effects “Wild Flower” & “Deep Purple”; Previously I’ve used just Wild Flower, or Pravana Colorsilk Vivids “Violet”. Wild Flower fades stupidly fast, but I love the color, sort of a blue-violet. Pravana Violet lasts an insane amount, but I did have terrible fading near the roots (it seemed to not stick to the healthiest, freshly bleached hair). Also Pravana Violet had a terrible habit of staining EVERYTHING: my tub, my pillow, even my body a pale lavender, for at least 5 days so I don’t know if it was worth the hassle. Besides it’s a pro-only product so it was hard for me to get in the first place. Mixing DP and WF together created a color very similar to Pravana Violet, and since this mixture is new, time will tell how long it lasts & how it fades.

BLACK

In this video I used Ion Jet Black, because I was in a rush and just picked it up at Sally Beauty Supply. My fave black dye is “1N Black” from Satin by Developlus. I prefer that formula and I think it’s blacker without being blue-black, which I think clashes with my overall coloring. I think the Satin Dye last longer, and is less damaging. I get mine at a non-chain beauty supply, but a search on google showed that you can buy it online.

I develop the black part of my hair with a level 10 developer from Ion. Using a level 10 is called tone-on tone or “deposit only” because it doesn’t cause a lot of damage and just barely opens the hair cuticle enough to deposit the color.
If you have further questions about my process or preferences, please leave them in the comment section below. This is my method and I’ve cultivated it over years of practice, trial and some serious error. As for giving you personalized advice about hair: Keep in mind I’m not a colorist, and even if I were I can’t assess what your hair needs, over the internet. Hair Coloring is much more involved and permanent compared to makeup, so please proceed at your own risk.

Volume from a Flat Iron?

Hi Guys and Dolls. I know I said I’d have some more information on the flat iron, but really any information about tourmaline flat irons can be found on google, yahoo, dogpile, bing, whatever your search engine of choice is :) , and more information on this one in particular can be found at Beautychoice.com.  I’m sorry I’m not providing some additional info for your guys, but really I’m no expert, so i’d need to do quite a bit of research, and I just started a new job, so I’m really tired. I know it sounds like excuses, but cut me some slack on this one, eh?

OK, the mousse: Fat Hair by Samy ( I got it at Target)

The Flat Iron was sent to be by Beautychoice.com. but this is less a review of of that flat iron and more of a demo of how to get volume and straightness/shape in one step. I do think this is a great flatiron, and the skull print of it makes me excited to do my hair, LOL! anyway, you all always ask for pictures/multiple angles of my hair, so here you go my darlings:

Thanks for checking out my blog :) I have more stuff coming up soon! the videos have been a bit slow lately, but it should be picking up (no less than 2 a week) soon!!!!!

PS, since you’re going to ask anyway, I got a seasonal Job at Sephora :)
