Secrets to Making Hair Color Last & Hair Coloring tips

I pretty much covered everything I wanted to say in this VERY LONG video. As I think of more tips, I’ll add them in here:

Another good thing to do to prevent staining is to go around your hair line with petroleum jelly. this will “repel” most of the hair dye. Just make sure not to get it on your hair!

When using Vegetable based dyes like Special Effects follow the directions and make sure you shampoo and dry your hair right before coloring, but don’t condition.  the conditioner will kind of ” block” the colorant from staining your hair.

When using a traditional dye, it’s best to have slightly dirty hair. the oils will protect your hair during the dying process.

Red hair color is generally the hardest color to keep from fading. Just an FYI

Calling all “Blondes” : several companies make “violet” shampoos that prevent Brassiness.

  6. I actually got my hair dyed a glowing violet color, and that successfully lasted no more than a week.. Red decided to stay put a little longer, but eventually faded quite a bit quicker than I expected. I did all I could to keep it lasting as long as possible… Ah well. I wish I had hair that would retain color a little better. Good times though! haha

Everyone things red is the hardest to keep…nope, it’s purple! It always fades FAST! As with any color, once you’ve colored it that shade a bunch of times, it will last longer, because you get color buildup. I wish fun colors could be TRULY perm!

  9. i absolutely adore your hair! it’s super gorgeous, especially loving the pink! :] anywho, i just wanted to ask you a few questions about hair color application, but first, some background of my hair: i have natural black hair that had some strips of hair bleached, then a magenta color added to it (was done at a salon), but now… it’s super faded and not as pretty… and to save costs i wanted to attempt to do it myself the first time.

    1) as you said in the above comment, you only reapply bleach to the roots, but when i apply color again (going to attempt special effects virgin rose), will the color match my freshly bleached roots to my faded pink color? i remember reading somewhere that you said you bleached your roots, and then last 2 minutes you apply bleach to the faded hair color.
    2) i remember before you had auburn hair, then you colored it bright pink a few days later. did you just apply the pink all over that auburn color to still get that bright pink? or did you bleach the top layer of your hair to achieve that brightness?
    3) do you shampoo and condition your hair before and after bleaching, as well as before or after coloring? or just only shampoo, or just only condition for either?

sorry for so many questions, i’m just a hair novice, so i just want to make sure what i’m doing is right… thank you so much!
